Jinbei HD600 Review - Guest Post from PROtog Customer Adam Lesniak

Author: Adam Lesniak

We often get feedback from customers on our gear. Whether it's positive or negative, it's always valued and used to improve what we do. Never before though, have we had a customer go to such lengths to provide a review like Adam has. Adam Lesniak has been a PROtog regular for a while now. When he purchased a Jinbei HD600 from us recently he decided, completely of his own accord, to write up a review which he's shared with us. Adam explains in his review that one of the main reasons for doing this was because there's minimal information out there about the Jinbei brand and their products. We'd like to thank Adam for his generosity and hope that you find his review informative and interesting. Cheers - the PROtog Team.

I recently shot a winter line of clothing, at my house, with the Jinbei HD 600. I haven’t seen a great deal of practical feedback about the HD 600, online, so I thought I would pass my experience back to PROtog to share with you guys, whom I’m guessing you’re reading this because you are thinking about buying one, but are still a bit dubious about the specs and reliability of another ‘cheap Chinese product’.

I wasn’t too fussed about having to work a couple of days of the Easter long weekend because that meant I could play with my new toy - the Jinbei HD 600 Handy Flash. I had bought it from PROtog a couple of weeks earlier but had only used it for a couple of small jobs.  I was looking forward to seeing if this baby could go the distance and live up to the hype.

I already knew the build was solid and the specs seemed to be true so I really just wanted to learn two things on this shoot:

1.  How many shots could I actually get out of the battery?
2.  How well did the Wireless system work and was it reliable?

I can report, I used the HD 600 for around 600 shots, at an average of 1/4 power, on the original charge from the manufacturer, and it was still floating between two and three bars on the battery level indicator!  Incredible!  I kept checking it, expecting it to be getting low but it just didn’t want to move down from three bars!  Once the battery has had a couple of full charges, I can only imagine how many shots you would get out of this battery.  I also gave it a charge when I finished for the day.  It charged to full power about an hour more quickly than my Photoflex Triton Flash, which was slightly more depleted at a solid two bars.  It definitely out performs the Triton Flash #1 in almost every way - versatility, recycle time, frames per second, battery life, recharge time and certainly matches the build quality.

As for the wireless system, I wasn’t expecting much.  The trigger is small, weighs nothing an feels pretty plasticy.  The receiver is a tiny little probe in the back of the head.  I had been using my Pixel triggers for half the day and decided to switch to the Jinbei trigger that comes with the HD 600, to give it a go.  I had a quick look at the instructions on how to set the channel correctly, slapped it on my hot shoe, hit the test button and... it just worked!  I’m not sure why I thought it wouldn’t.  The flash power level control worked well, the modeling light could be turned on and off and it reliably triggered the flash.  When working fast, I didn’t have many misfires at all.  For a bit of balance, I felt like I had a few too many misfires when putting the camera down to rearrange something for 5 -10 mins or so, and then wanting to shoot again, but I came to the conclusion that maybe I was just a bit impatient in not giving the HD 600 a fair chance to wake up before I wanted to start shooting again.  We’re only talking about 1 to 2 frames before she starts popping again.

I will be using the Jinbei trigger from now on until I have a reason to look for something else. I want to try it in busy environments from a distance to see how it goes there.  I’ll need to find a workflow to control 3-4 of them from a distance as well.  However, if you’re a photographer that can work multiple strobes fast and by feel, I think the HD 600 will be right up your alley.

All in all, the HD 600 has lived up to the hype so far. I have already asked Mike to put my name down for a couple more when they are back in stock.  Affordable, easy to use, lots of modifiers, long battery life, transportable, no cords, built in wireless trigger.  It just needs to pass the longevity test to become a total performer but if you check out Jinbei as a company, it seems it will tick that box, too.  My experiences with PROtog have been exceptional up to this point so I’m trusting that they would not have taken this product on if they hadn’t done their research and weren’t prepared to back it up.  My plan is to give a couple more updates on the various projects I’m working on so stay tuned.
