Light Modifiers, such as softboxes and umbrellas are the two most basic lighting modifiers used in studio lighting and strobist setups. Both are capable of producing soft, flattering light with a few fundamental differences. Umbrellas, which can be either shoot-through or reflective, are great for beginners as they are inexpensive, portable, and very easy to set up. However, because umbrellas throw light in a wide beam, they may not be suitable for instances where the light must be precisely controlled and restricted to a small area. Softboxes, on the other hand, offer more controlled directional light with the tradeoff of higher cost and decreased portability.
